Case study: Collaboration with Countryside Properties

Steelcraft recently joined forces with regeneration specialists Countryside Properties, formerly known as Vistry, to work on two transformative projects: Maria Street in Benwell, Newcastle, and Whitley Court in Wrekenton, Gateshead.

Maria Street - Benwell, Newcastle

The redevelopment of derelict land into a community housing 59 new homes posed challenges, particularly regarding safety around retaining walls. We helped by manufacturing and fitting railings strategically around the site.

Some walls presented us with a challenge, as conventional fixing into the top of walls was not an option. To resolve this, we crafted bespoke posts - some incorporating cranked sections to deter climbing. Handrails and balustrades were also fitted onto the steps for safety.

Whitley Court - Wrekenton, Gateshead

Whitley Court's transformation from a brownfield site into a mixed-tenure housing development with supported accommodation required a variety of metalwork from railings to stair protection.

The introduction of balustrades, both internally and externally, contributed to the secure yet beautiful aesthetic of the supported accommodation. We created dual-rail balustrades for sensory garden steps and installed glass balustrades with PVC-capped handrails for communal stairways, keeping relatively small access areas bright and open, and reflecting a blend of functionality and modern design.
