How to Measure for a Gate

Are you planning to purchase a new gate but unsure where to begin? Don’t worry—measuring for a gate doesn’t have to be complicated. With just two pieces of information, you’ll be ready to order the perfect gate for your space.

Follow this guide for simple, step-by-step instructions to ensure a perfect fit.

What You Need to Measure

1. The Aperture (Pathway Width)

The aperture is the horizontal width of the opening you want the gate to fill. This is often the only measurement you need to order a gate. Simply measure the clear opening, and we’ll ensure a suitable fit based on this dimension.

2. Hinge Side (Left or Right)

Decide which side you’d like your hinges on. This is essential for functionality and smooth installation. Once you’ve gathered these two details, you’re ready to go. Need more help?

Tips for Accurate Measuring

Follow these practices to ensure your measurements are precise:

  • Use the right tools. Always use a metal or laser tape measure. Cloth ones can stretch, resulting in inaccurate readings.
  • Take measurements in multiple locations. If measuring between existing structures like fencing, posts, or brickwork, measure at both ground level and at least halfway up (approximately 500mm). This ensures your account for any inconsistencies.
  • Measuring for new posts? Take the measurement across the pathway at ground level. This will be the dimension inside the posts once your gate is installed.
  • Choose the larger measurement. If your measurements differ slightly, use the larger one as your aperture size. Don’t worry about small discrepancies; we’ll make sure your gate fits perfectly.
  • Measure twice, order once. Double-check your measurements or have someone verify them to avoid mistakes.

Here are a few additional tips to keep in mind:

  • Allow for ground clearance. On average, there’s a 75mm gap between the gate and the ground. Ensure the area the gate will swing over is level and free from obstructions.
  • Watch for sloping pathways or nearby steps. If the ground isn’t level or there are obstacles close to the gate, these might affect how the gate opens. We can help you work around such issues.
  • Check for underground services. Be mindful of any pipes, cables, or manholes in the vicinity that could impact installation.
